FICS (Free Internet Chess Server, freechess.org) is a volunteer-run online chess server with no identified publishing company: its homepage describes it as "one of the oldest and one of the largest internet chess servers", with "over 300000 registered users", and the Wikipedia article about the server places its launch in March 1995, when former Internet Chess Server programmers built a free alternative to the newly commercial Internet Chess Club under the motto "we do it for the game — not the money".
