What the service is
Arena Chess GUI is a free graphical interface for chess engines developed in Germany by Martin Blume; the official site carries a 2002-2019 copyright in his name and allows installation "on as many computers as you like free of charge". The Chessprogramming wiki dates the first public release (0.76 beta) to March 2002 and notes that the program, written in Delphi, is closed-source freeware. Arena lets the user drive any engine speaking the UCI or Winboard protocol: play against it (some engines have adjustable strength), analyse games automatically, run engine-versus-engine tournaments, consult opening books, replay, search and filter PGN or EPD databases (including by position), probe Gaviota and Syzygy tablebases, use a DGT electronic board and connect to an external ICS server. The interface ships in German and English, with French, Czech, Polish, Catalan, Spanish, Swedish and Italian translations. Windows version 3.5.1 has been available since 20 December 2015; the Linux 3.10 beta since 19 January 2020. The software is entirely free, with no paid tier. Arena imports nothing from Chess.com or Lichess, contains no exercises, courses, spaced repetition or weakness diagnosis, and exists neither on mobile nor on the web.

- 2020-01Arena 3.10 beta for Linux goes online on 19 January 2020, with a fix for Debian 10 where the program would not start; it is the last published release.
- 2019-12Arena 3.9 beta for Linux (x64 and ARM64) is released on 28 December 2019 and adds Syzygy tablebase support up to 7 pieces, bundling Stockfish 10 and Arasan 21.4.
- 2017-01Arena 1.1 for Linux (64-bit, 32-bit and 32-bit ARM) is published on 29 January 2017, with Stockfish 8 in the package.
- 2015-12Arena 3.5.1 for Windows, the current stable release, has been available since 20 December 2015 (engines SOS, AnMon, Rybka 2.3.2a free, Spike and others included).
- 2014-01Arena 3.5 is released in January 2014, according to the version history on the Chessprogramming wiki (after 3.0 in December 2010 and 2.0 in December 2008).
