What the service is

Lucas Chess is free desktop software written and maintained by a single developer, “lukasmonk” on GitHub (the download page gives “lukasmonk at gmail” as the contact). The code is published under the GPL-3.0 licence: the lucaschessR2 repository has been open since March 2022, and lucaschessR6, which carries the current version, since May 2024. The program installs on Windows and Linux, as an installer or a portable build, and lets you play 57 engines set “from 0 to 3600 elo”, with training modules (tactics, mates, endgames on Gaviota tablebases, openings from polyglot books) and a mode that rebuilds exercises out of the blunders in one of your games. There is no account, no subscription and no server: everything runs on the user’s own machine, and the project has no commercial business model.
