What the service is

HIARCS Chess Explorer Pro is published by Applied Computer Concepts Ltd, an English company established in 1991; the software is designed and developed by Mark Uniacke (hiarcs.com home page). According to Wikipedia the HIARCS engine dates back to 1980, the Chess Explorer interface has shipped with the engine since HIARCS 14 (August 2012), and the Pro edition was first released on 5 January 2022 (hiarcs.com news page). The Windows and macOS program combines a game database (PGN import, ChessBase formats, up to 30 million games), HIARCS 15 engines for analysis and blunder checking, multi-source opening trees, a player explorer, a playing mode against the engine with handicap levels, and a guess-the-move mode on database games. It is sold as a one-off purchase from £62.45 / €74.95 / $79.95, with 1.x updates free for existing customers; a Standard edition costs €49.95. The pages we read mention neither a trial version nor a refund policy. The software does not connect to Lichess or Chess.com accounts, offers no exercises or courses, and has no mobile version (the HIARCS Chess iOS apps are separate products). The interface is available in nine languages, including French.
