What the service is

The chess course is published by Duolingo, Inc., a Pittsburgh company founded in 2011 by Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker and listed on the NASDAQ since 2021 under the ticker DUOL. Launched on 22 April 2025, it sits alongside the language, maths and music courses inside the same app: a linear path that Duolingo says is 75% puzzle-based and that runs "from complete beginner to around a 1500 Elo rating". Players face Oscar, the tutor character, or an opponent of similar strength matched on an internal rating; since 11 August 2026 a Game Review has commented on iOS on the games played inside the app. The course is advertised as "available for free to all learners": revenue comes from advertising, gem purchases and the Super and Max subscriptions shared with the rest of the app.
