What the service is
Playchess is the online play server of ChessBase GmbH, a Hamburg (Germany) company founded in 1986 by Matthias Wüllenweber, Frederic Friedel and Gisbert Jacoby ("About ChessBase" page of the shop). Initially called the "Fritz Server", it was opened to the public on 20 September 2001 according to the 15th-anniversary article published on 20 September 2016 on en.chessbase.com; a browser version has existed since 2013 according to Wikipedia. The play.chessbase.com site lets you play rated games against humans in bullet, blitz and slow time controls, with "games with hints" for beginners, play against Fritz with assistance, follow tournament broadcasts and watch games on the server. Playchess is part of the ChessBase Account, which also bundles the Tactics, Videos, Openings, Live Database (8 million games), My Games (cloud storage), Let’s Check, Players Database, Studies and Quiz web apps. Creating an account is free for playing; the paid plans shown on account.chessbase.com are Starter (€34.90 a year or €3.49 a month) and Premium (€49.90 a year or €4.99 a month), with a 90-day free trial; buying ChessBase'26 includes one year of Premium. The account interface is available in English, German, Spanish and French. The service produces no aggregated weakness diagnosis, generates no exercises from your own games and does not import Lichess or Chess.com games.
