The Lucena position is a fundamental rook endgame configuration in which the side with the passed pawn has advanced it to the seventh rank and can force a win using a precise technique known as "building a bridge."
In this position, the attacking king stands on the adjacent file at the seventh rank, in front of the pawn, while its rook stands nearby. The defending king is kept at bay by the pawn. The defending rook tries to deliver continuous checks along the file to prevent the attacking king from stepping forward. The solution — building a bridge — unfolds in four steps: (1) the attacking rook drives the defending king away with lateral checks; (2) the attacking king steps out from in front of the pawn; (3) the attacking rook swings to the fourth or fifth rank to shield the king from further checks; (4) the king advances freely until promotion is inevitable.
In practice, memorize this sequence — it is decisive in countless rook endgames. If you hold the advanced passed pawn, steer toward this winning setup. If you are defending, try to prevent the attacking king from escaping in front of its pawn, or keep your king close enough to contest the promotion square.
