Four Knights Game - 1. e4
Four Knights Game - 1. e4
Claim the centre at once and open lines for the king’s bishop and the queen.
Overview
The Four Knights Game arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6: all four knights come out first, both sides claim a central pawn, and every piece heads for a natural square. It is arguably the most straightforward opening in the classical repertoire — no strange moves, no early sacrifices required.
The C49 line with 4.Bb5 Bb4 and both sides castling is the symmetrical variation par excellence. Both players mirror each other, and the game is decided not by a tactical shot but by the quality of the manoeuvring: where the knights are regrouped, when to push d4 or d5, how to handle the central tension.
It suits players who want to absorb sound opening principles and learn manoeuvring play, rather than those hunting for a sharp gambit. White’s typical regrouping Nc3-e2-g3 is a textbook illustration of "improving a piece you have already developed".
Its strength is solidity: the resulting structures are healthy, with no obvious weakness, and it is hard to lose quickly. Its risk is the flip side — symmetry can produce positions where White holds barely any edge, and a player without medium-term plans runs out of ideas soon after move 12.
The main line, move by move
Every move is explained: play through them in order to understand the opening’s logic.
- 1. e4Claim the centre at once and open lines for the king’s bishop and the queen.
- 1… e5Black answers centre with centre and claims exactly as much space as White.
- 2. Nf3Attack the e5 pawn while developing, the most economical way of joining the game.
- 2… Nc6Black defends the central pawn with a piece rather than committing a pawn.
- 3. Nc3Bring out the second piece toward the centre, reinforcing control of e4 and d5.
- 3… Nf6Black mirrors and presses e4: the four knights structure is now on the board.
- 4. Bb5The bishop targets the knight guarding e5 and prepares immediate castling.
- 4… Bb4Black copies the pressure against the c3 knight, defender of the e4 pawn.
- 5. O-OTuck the king away before any central operation, the top priority in symmetrical play.
- 5… O-OBlack also completes king safety and keeps the position perfectly balanced.
- 6. d3Solidly prop up e4 so the c3 knight is freed from its defensive duty.
- 6… d6Black shores up e5 the same way and keeps a healthy pawn chain.
- 7. h3Deny g4 to Black’s pieces and prepare a calm retreat square for the light bishop.
- 7… h6Black takes the same precaution against a White piece landing on g5.
- 8. Ne2Begin a regrouping manoeuvre: the knight leaves c3 to head for the kingside.
- 8… Ne7Black copies the idea and frees the diagonal of the light-squared bishop.
- 9. Ng3The knight reaches its ideal post, looking toward f5 and Black’s kingside.
- 9… Ng6Black posts the knight symmetrically, keeping an eye on f4 and h4.
- 10. c3Kick the bishop off b4 and prepare the big central advance with d4.
- 10… Ba5Black’s bishop keeps the diagonal toward c3 and d2 instead of retreating passively.
- 11. d4The awaited moment: challenge e5 and open lines for White’s pieces.
- 11… c6Black prepares a c7 haven for the bishop and supports a future d5.
- 12. Bd3The bishop returns to the diagonal aiming at h7, a natural target after the central push.
Plans for both sides
White’s plan
Regroup the knight via c3-e2-g3, eyeing f5, and free the c-file for the c3 pawn. Solidify with h3 and c3, then build the centre with d4, keeping the e4/d4 versus e5/d6 tension. Once the centre is stable, look for kingside space with f4 or a piece landing on f5.
Black’s plan
Mirror the manoeuvre: Nc6-e7-g6 to cover f5 and f4, with h6 against a white piece on g5. Retreat the bishop to a5 (or c5) before c3 kicks it, then support the centre with c6 and d6. If White plays d4, make a conscious choice between holding e5, capturing on d4, or advancing e4, depending on where the pieces stand.

Typical pawn structures
Symmetrical e4/d3 versus e5/d6 structure (closed "mirror Spanish" centre)
Both sides share the same skeleton: modest e- and d-pawns, no weaknesses, no passed pawn in sight. The game therefore hinges entirely on the pieces. White’s plan is the regrouping Nc3-e2-g3 aiming at f5, preceded by h3, which takes the g4 square away from Black’s bishop. Then c3 prepares d4: White wants to turn this static centre into a mobile one at the moment his pieces stand better. Black mirrors with Nc6-e7-g6 (covering f4 and f5) plus h6. Whoever pushes d4/d5 without preparation opens lines for the opponent: here patience and knight placement matter more than a forcing move.
Broad white centre d4+e4 versus Black’s e5-d6-c6 chain
This is the structure the main line produces after c3, d4 and c6: White has two central pawns side by side, Black a compact e5-d6-c6 chain supporting his own centre. Three scenarios exist and they must be told apart. If Black captures on d4, the centre opens and superior coordination counts at once — the d- and e-files come alive. If White pushes d5, the centre closes and play shifts to the wings: White looks for c4 and space, Black for f5 or activity on the c-file. If the tension stays, each side improves pieces: bishop on d3 and knights on f3/g3 for White, knights on g6/f6 and bishop on a5 for Black. Remember the general rule: resolve the central tension only when it improves your pieces, not merely because you can.
Common mistakes
Assuming symmetry lets you copy moves forever. Copying works for a while in this line, but White is moving with an extra tempo: at some point mechanical imitation leaves a square or a pawn undefended. Every move must be checked on its own merits, especially when the central tension resolves.
Developing the bishop to b5/b4 and then letting it be kicked around aimlessly. The dark-squared bishop should anticipate the c3 push — retreating to a5 or c5 at the right moment is part of the variation. Conversely, voluntarily trading that bishop for a knight without a concrete reason hands over the bishop pair in a position where it has long-term value.
Dismissing the knight manoeuvre to g3/g6. Many players at this level see Ne2 as "backwards" and prefer an immediate attacking move. But in a closed, symmetrical position the regrouping is the strong move: the knight will control f5/f4, the key squares of the structure.
Finally, pushing d4 (or d5) reflexively as soon as it is available. Opening the centre while the opponent’s pieces are better coordinated turns a solid position into a vulnerable one. The tension can often be maintained for several moves while you improve your pieces.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Four Knights Game good for a beginner?
Yes — it is one of the best learning openings: every move follows a clear principle (centre, development, castling). It teaches manoeuvring rather than memorising long lines. The trade-off is that White rarely gets a crushing advantage from it.
Why play Ne2 then Ng3 when the knight was already developed on c3?
On c3 the knight blocks the c-pawn and has no good forward square. Via e2-g3 it controls f5 and frees the c3 push that will support d4. This is the principle of improving an already developed piece, typical of closed positions.
What if Black copies all my moves in this line?
Just keep playing sensibly: you move with an extra tempo, so you decide when to break the symmetry. In practice it is usually the central d4 push or a piece landing on f5 that ends the mirroring. Simply check that each move stands on its own.
What is the difference between the Four Knights and the Scotch Four Knights?
In the C49 line shown here, White keeps the centre closed and manoeuvres with d3, c3 and then d4. In the Scotch version (4.d4) the centre opens at once and play becomes far more concrete and tactical. The first suits positional players, the second those who like forcing lines.

Nakamura, Hi (2816) — Carlsen, M. (2839)Draw · 2025
Hikaru Nakamura, five-time US champion and an online blitz legend, versus Magnus Carlsen, world champion from 2013 to 2023 and holder of the highest rating ever recorded. For years Nakamura’s classical score against the Norwegian was famously dreadful, which gives every one of their meetings an extra charge — here the sober Four Knights Game is the battleground.

Two World Championship challengers head to head: Ian Nepomniachtchi, who would challenge Carlsen later in 2021, and Fabiano Caruana, the American who held the Norwegian to twelve straight classical draws in 2018 before falling in the tiebreaks. The Four Knights Game is symmetrical and classical — expect a battle of ideas rather than fireworks.

Magnus Carlsen, then reigning world champion and the supreme master of squeezing water from stone, takes White against Wesley So, whose solidity is legendary — and who beat Carlsen in the final of the first Fischer Random world championship in 2019. The Four Knights offers little to attack: ideal for the Norwegian, who thrives on grinding opponents down over fifty moves.

Two deep strategists in the Four Knights: the apparent simplicity hides positional chess of the highest order.
