Build the habit, every move, of scanning your undefended pieces and checking what the opponent’s last move threatens. Consistency of that check matters more than calculation.

Can a defended piece still fall?

Yes, if it’s attacked more times than it’s defended, or if its defender is itself attacked, pinned or deflected. Always count attackers against defenders.

What is it?

A hung piece is one of your pieces left under attack without being defended (or not enough): your opponent takes it for free. It’s the single most common cause of lost games at every level.

How it happens

It happens by moving a piece without seeing it’s attacked, by moving a defender, or by opening a line that puts one of your pieces under fire. Often it’s a lack of a systematic check after the opponent’s move.
