The good news is that this is the most mechanical error type in chess. It requires no deep calculation and no memorised theory. It requires a routine, applied move after move, until it runs on autopilot.

Why pieces hang (the real causes)

On each relevant square, count attackers against defenders and compare the piece values involved. A piece defended once and attacked twice is gone. A rook defended by a pawn but attacked by a bishop is still a loss of the exchange.
4. Check the move you actually want to play
Before releasing the piece, ask three questions: is the destination square defended? Was this piece doing defensive work? Does my move open a line towards my king or towards an unprotected piece?
5. Look for enemy checks, captures and threats in reply
This is the highest-yield step: after your intended move, list every enemy check, every enemy capture, then the serious threats. Winning tactics almost always grow out of one of those three.

After a sequence of exchanges. Every capture rewires who protects what. A rook that was defending a knight disappears, and the knight is suddenly alone without anyone noticing.
Right after castling. The king changes corner, the rook changes file, and pieces that were covered no longer are. It is a silent reorganisation of the whole defensive network.
While attacking. The attacker looks forward. The pieces left behind become targets for a counterattack.

- Confusing defended with safe. A defended piece can still be taken if the attacker is worth less, or if the defender is pinned, overloaded or deflected.
- Capturing because you can. Every capture needs evaluation: what happens to my piece on that square, and what happens to the structure afterwards? A trade that wins a pawn but opens a file towards your king is a bad deal.
- Playing "obvious" moves too fast. Recaptures and forced-looking moves are exactly where the check gets skipped. And an enemy in-between move can flip the whole sequence.
- Ignoring checks. A check changes everything: it forces a reply, and it buys the opponent the tempo needed to capture something elsewhere.
