← Sicilian Najdorf
Carlsen, M. – Vachier Lagrave, M.
2842 2018 · Draw
Carlsen (2842) met Vachier-Lagrave (2779) in 2018 in a Najdorf where White went for the slow 6.f3 setup. Queens came off on move 25, and the game turned into a technical endgame: White ran the a-pawn all the way to 36.a8=Q, but Black immediately clawed the material back with 36...Nf3+, 37...Nxe1+ and 38...Rxf2+. The engine flags no turning point at all — neither side ever let the game slip. The accuracy figures back that up: 97% for White, 94% for Black, and the repetition 46.Rb6 Bc5 47.Rb5 Bd6 48.Rb6 Bc5 49.Rb5 sealed the draw. The lesson: a spectacular pawn race isn’t automatically a blunder — both players had counted it out.
