Nakamura, Hi – So, W.
2777 2018 · White wins (resignation, time or agreement)
Nakamura (2777) against So (2780), 2018: a wide-open 1.e4 e5 game that simplified early, queens coming off with 22.Qc5 Qxc5, leaving a rook-and-minor-piece endgame where White kept the pull. So defended accurately for a long stretch — 84% at least good moves against White’s 92% — but the ending turned twice. First 54...Rg2, a missed chance that pushed the evaluation from +1.3 to +4.7; then 57...Rg5+, which sent it from +5.2 to +15.0. The lesson for club players: in an already worse endgame, rook placement is everything, and two consecutive slips are enough to turn a holdable defense into a loss. White wrapped up after 59.Be4.
